Coupled Modelling of Land Surface Microwave Interactions Using Envisat Asar Data
نویسنده
چکیده
In the last decades microwave remote sensing has proven its capability to provide valuable information about the land surface. New sensor generations as e.g. ENVISAT ASAR are capable to provide frequent imagery with an high information content. To make use of the multiple imaging capabilities of those sensors, sophisticated parameter inversion and assimilation strategies have to be applied. The objective of the presented work is the analysis and quantitative description of the backscattering processes of vegetated areas by means of microwave backscattering models. The effect of changing imaging geometries is investigated and models for the description of bare soil and vegetation backscattering are developed. Spatially distributed model parameterisation is realized by synergistic coupling of microwave scattering models with a physically based land surface process model. This enables the simulation of realistic SAR images, based on bioand geophysical parameters. The approach is validated using nine ENVISAT ASAR images. A pixelwise comparison between simulated and observed backscattering coefficients revealed a mean deviation of 0.5 dB with a corresponding standard deviation of 2.8 dB.

5 Years of Envisat Asar Soil Moisture Observations in Southern German
Soil moisture is a key variable for the water and energy exchanges at the land surface. The determination of soil moisture dynamics from space is one of the most prominent, but also most challenging applications for recent active microwave sensor systems. Since the launch of ENVISAT ASAR, more than 4 years of data is available for the retrieval of soil moisture information. The wide area covera...

A new microwave backscattering model for vegetated areas was developed. It enables the separation of the soil and vegetation contributions to the backscattering coefficient, which is crucial to obtain reliable simulation results for different imaging geometries. It is shown, that the vegetation influence on the signal can be directly derived from ENVISAT ASAR alternating polarization data. It i...

Wetlands are generally accepted as being the largest but least well quantified single source of methane (CH4). The extent of wetland or inundation is a key factor controlling methane emissions, both in nature and in the parameterisations used in large-scale land surface and climate models. Satellite-derived datasets of wetland extent are available on the global scale, but the resolution is rath...

The advantage of ENVISAT ASAR over its predecessors, namely ERS-1 and ERS-2, as a land observation tool resides in its multiple polarization and multi-look angle capabilities. As a radar sensor the ASAR backscattering coefficient is sensitive to the moisture content of the scattering media and its geometrical properties (i.e. size, shape, roughness, and orientation). From the quantitative analy...
